The report, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/310\/2avsz0dillm5re7a4po5w4gjc\/0\/43226cc3c97d443b3c0d6e1b1e3ed187569e2195020aac3269f6784aed4c44f4\">Building Transition: How to Scale and Finance an Inclusive Transition for the Built Environment<\/a>,\u201d focuses on the 75% of lower-performing buildings that have not yet adopted green building practices.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative, led by the UK\u2019s Building Research Establishment (<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/310\/2avsz0dillm5re7a4po5w4gjc\/1\/3e917c1056ce32527d6041728da98014e338e19310de6e92132620f629285020\">BRE<\/a>), the Green Building Council of Australia (<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/310\/2avsz0dillm5re7a4po5w4gjc\/2\/b1bf6f9d3d12eddbec0f4bf2fb6425d059b3d06a185994eeda4766de5103e8c2\">GBCA<\/a>), the Singapore Green Building Council (<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/310\/2avsz0dillm5re7a4po5w4gjc\/3\/9a60421fc83918e98a282845e6c1f5b814e5373ced05ef6af517aba6fc061950\">SGBC<\/a>), the U.S. Green Building Council (<a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/310\/2avsz0dillm5re7a4po5w4gjc\/4\/8791794c1aec47c0d42d547c1f89442c301978180ec833b932b291da09273d4d\">USGBC<\/a>), and <a href=\"https:\/\/usw2.nyl.as\/t1\/310\/2avsz0dillm5re7a4po5w4gjc\/5\/b1b8ce0929f1b9f953607b20737a340b14df645eb19503b0dba34017c61e198c\">Alliance HQE-GBC France<\/a>, seeks to close the gap between top performers and the rest of the market.<\/p>\n<p>With the building sector accounting for a significant share of global emissions, unlocking investments for the underperforming majority is seen as a crucial step in decarbonizing at scale. This call to action lays out how to attract capital to this large untapped segment, ensuring that decarbonization happens across the entire built environment \u2013 not just in the elite tier of buildings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuilding Transition\u201d identifies a critical gap in the industry \u2013 while high-performing buildings have access to green finance and resources, most buildings remain locked out due to a lack of capital. The report offers key recommendations to address this challenge:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Policy and taxonomy reform<\/strong>: Stronger policies and taxonomies that direct capital toward underperforming buildings, and context-specific, performance-oriented criteria tailored to diverse building types, ensuring investment reaches all buildings.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Global decarbonization standards: <\/strong>Defining a credible decarbonization transition and providing common standards, metrics, and decarbonization tools that can be used globally while allowing for harmonization across diverse assets and geographies.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Resilience in finance<\/strong>: Incorporating adaptation and resilience in real estate finance to account for the impacts of both acute and chronic climate events. Currently, this is not a common practice in real estate finance, and lack of resilience makes lower-performing buildings, the \u201cother 75%,\u201d more vulnerable to becoming stranded assets and suffering from climate impacts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The new call to action builds on the earlier report, \u201cFinancing Transformation: A Guide to Green Building for Green Bonds and Green Loans,\u201d which outlined how green building certifications \u2013 such as LEED, BREEAM, Green Star, Green Mark, and HQE \u2013 can set the benchmark for sustainable investments. This new report expands the conversation to ensure that financing solutions are inclusive, enabling more building owners to access the funds needed to make meaningful improvements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuilding Transition\u201d represents a critical step in making sustainable finance accessible to a wider range of building owners, ensuring that decarbonization can happen at scale and in every corner of the built environment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jane Goddard, Deputy CEO of BRE&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBridging the gap between high-performing and underperforming buildings is essential to achieving our global decarbonization goals. However, making improvements to the vast stock of existing buildings requires access to capital. \u201cBuilding Transition\u201d underscores the importance of uniting key stakeholders such as investors and policymakers to create more opportunities for building owners to act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Davina Rooney, CEO of the Green Building Council of Australia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAchieving deep decarbonization across the building sector means leaving no stone unturned \u2013 from iconic CBD towers to suburban homes and everything in between. We must ensure green finance is accessible to all, especially those properties yet to benefit from sustainable investment.
